THUG.be: Persistent Crime Strategy Game

Bekijk hoe Label 111 THUG.be ontwikkelde: een persistent online crime strategy game met crews, NPC’s, businesses, jobs en een levende stad.

Client: dylan

For THUG, we created a persistent online crime management and street strategy game where jobs, crews, businesses, Families, conflicts and personal relationships form one connected living city.

Problem

THUG needed to become more than a traditional browser game built around disconnected pages, static missions and waiting timers. The objective was to create an online crime strategy game where every major system meaningfully affects the others. Jobs needed to emerge from genuine problems within the city. NPCs and crews needed to compete for the same work. People had to remember how the player treated them, refuse assignments and develop expectations around payment, safety and promotion. Families needed to impose rules, permits and obligations that genuinely affected available actions. At the same time, the growing number of systems had to remain fast and easy to manage. The interface could not feel like a business software dashboard. It needed to feel like a command console for a persistent strategy game.

Approach

We built THUG around a server-authoritative architecture using Laravel and React. The backend controls world state, actions, requirements, deadlines and consequences. The frontend presents that information through compact hubs, dossiers and dedicated workflows. Instead of placing every feature onto one large page, we developed a route-driven structure: Command shows what currently requires attention. Work presents available and active contracts. People contains scouting, crew members, contacts and person dossiers. Crew manages structure, authority, capacity and finances. Families control terms, permits, rules and obligations. Conflicts manages intelligence, defence, operations and diplomacy. Heists progress through dedicated phases from briefing to debrief. We also created a living job market where contracts do not wait indefinitely for the player. Jobs can be claimed, temporarily reserved, directly offered or awarded through an application window. NPCs, crews and Families can use the same market structure. Important actions use server-generated quotes, state versions and idempotency to prevent duplicate payments, repeated effects and mutations based on outdated information.

What we built

From corner hustler to city authorityTHUG is a persistent online crime management and street strategy game. The player starts with very little, takes on work, builds relationships and gradually establishes a position within the city.Progression is not based on selecting a rigid class. Background, decisions and behaviour influence how the character develops. Players can move towards street work, logistics, businesses, crew leadership, intelligence, conflict or institutional power within a Family.A city that keeps movingThe world of THUG contains five districts, each with its own economic and criminal context. Crews, Families, businesses, shipments, corners and local problems continue to change.Jobs are therefore not generated solely as random templates. They can emerge from specific situations: A business is running low on stock.  A shipment arrives incomplete.  A
